When I attend city council forums, I get a lot of questions about affordable housing. Generally everyone agrees we need it in order to keep the residents that have grown up in this city from being forced to move out due to rising property taxes. Do you have recommendations for how to improve our bicycle infrastructure? Then why aren't you saying anything about it? Well, here's your chance, the city is finally unpdating the Bicycle Master Plan, and shockingly they want public input BEFORE a decision is made. One of the main problems with our current form of democracy is that there are many people who simply don't vote. Why don't they vote? There are many reasons: they don't think their vote counts, they don't identify with any of the candidates, they can't take time off work to vote, they don't trust the voting process, etc. Here is a very interesting article with several suggestions on how to combat this. I'm glad there are some people who are working on this problem with our system.

The city has announced that it will not expand it's involvement in nuclear plants down in south texas. This is a good decision by the city council. Check out the story here.

Gentrification is a major issue in our City. Some of the neighborhoods that are desirable today because they are so close to downtown are traditionally lower class, and either Hispanic or African-American. Because this land is becoming so expensive, property taxes are rising and rents are going up. This causes long time residents of these neighborhoods to be forced farther and farther out. This is clearly a problem if we want Austin to remain a diverse city and keep our unique culture. Here's one proposal that the city is contemplating using in order to do this. I have some other ideas.
