Is it possible for the city of Austin to completely eliminate its solid waste? That's the goal of a new "zero-waste" plan that the city has commissioned a California firm to compose. The plan will presumably expand the recycling program, promote reuse of items, and create a city run composting pickup plan. This is great news for people, like myself, who believe that the city should join others such as Seattle, Portland and San Francisco who currently have zero-waste plans.
The study is scheduled to be completed by July, which means it will be after the election and a new group of council members will be on board. We need to make sure that those council members are committed to seeing the goals of this zero-waste plan fulfilled. You can read more about the zero-waste plan here. Note that the article also discusses the need to pass a ban on petroleum-based plastic bags, something that Whole Foods has already shown can be done by large companies.
